Cereal Milk evolution: How Cookies has milked its marketing potential

Cookies has a lot of strains that we consider to be icons even in today’s hyper marketed cannabis world, but possibly the unsung hero of the whole brand is Cereal Milk. It was one of the first strains that was released under the iteration of the brand as we know it operating today, but Cereal Milk was also selected with some fairly old school philosophy. Its creator Powerzzzup hypes it to the max – for good reason – and the organic marketing campaign Cookies has run with it has taken this pheno into the stratosphere. Cereal Milk has more or less been the blueprint for how strain releases get hyped up in the legal market, and the way Cookies has bred the strain with other bangers shows the way they’re already making the next big thing while craft growers refine the original.

A little history lesson on Cereal Milk: it’s the #18 hybrid of Snowman x Y Life (the same strain as Gary Payton) by Powerzzzup; strain fka Randy Frost, breeder fka PieGuy420. The story goes that the name was created when Berner and Powerzzzup were smoking it together and Berner remarked that it tasted like the milk at the bottom of a cereal bowl from a sugary cereal. The motif was pushed hard by both Cookies the weed brand and CookiesSF the clothing brand. It actually was such a hype release at the time that allegedly an LA print house leaked the bag designs and Berner denied that it was even a real strain from them. Even though that was a fairly obvious lie considering that design was released right in the middle of the graphics over blue era of their packaging design, this hyped the crowd up even more for the original release, and the rest is history. This version of Cereal Milk has been kicking around the DC market on a few vendor menus, and it’s from an under the radar facility in Maine. The cut of Cereal Milk has been kicking around Maine for a couple of years now, with the most well known production of it being High Road with a lot of the hash of it washed by Mega Raw Melts. Cereal Milk is one of the closest things that Cookies has on the current lineup to the original Girl Scout Cookies, with the slight fermented fruit under cookie dough and gas. This version looked great with a dense structure, bold hue and great resin. It’s also quite distractingly potent and I enjoyed it, but hearing some vendors decline to white label it for their brand made sense to me and served better as the bargain gas it is.

Cereal A La Mode

Cereal A La Mode - Cookies Maywood

The next stage of the Cereal Milk development is Cereal A La Mode. It’s a hybrid of Cereal Milk x Georgia Pie and a Maywood in-house collab with Powerzzzup also using genetics from Seed Junky. When these ice cream cartons first released a little over a year ago, I was pretty skeptical, but in legal markets they usually come with a small jar inside the carton, and on the traditional market it comes the way everyone on Twitter clamors for, in a ziploc. Immediately after opening I was greeted with gas and resin, which in my book is a great first impression. It’s easily the prettiest flower I’ve ever smoked from Cookies anywhere, but also a great showing from California in general as some of the fresher flower I’ve sampled from the state. Behind the great looks and killer gas, the flavor stains your palate with confectionary kerosene and the potency is intense. I’ve been waiting to try this strain for a couple of years, and as much as is blows me away now, I think it would’ve broken my brain if I tried it a couple of years ago. The effect is cozy and this is the kind of weed I’d want to keep in the headstash for a while.

Cinnamon Milk

Cinnamon Milk - Cookies Maywood

The newest evolution of the Cereal Milk line, Cookies brought the same team back for a victory lap and it truly is an example of lightning striking twice. The hybrid is Cereal A La Mode x Sherb Z, building on that last generation. It wades its way into the Z zeitgeist while also staying true to the traits that made cereal milk great. It’s dense and resinous with eye appeal on point, but it’s also got that gas and berries aroma and flavor that we know and love. However, this newest iteration also offers a strong cinnamon flavor on the exhale as well as a disgusting level of potency. Everything about this sample screams “next level” (the same way Powerzzzup does if we’re being real) which is why it’s been taking over in Cookies locations all across the US and beyond. The hybrid is the most refined version of Cookies’ best foot forward and it’s definitely something I recommend trying, especially at the Terpy Dabber menu price.
